What is Cloud Computing?

Once upon a time (and still today in many parts of the world), people would collect water from the river. Later, they drilled their own wells. Later still, reservoirs were built, pipes laid, and people could get water when they needed it, in their home, and pay for what they used.

Once upon a time, businesses would bring a stack of cards to a processing centre and collect the output (that was called mainframe time-share). Later, busineses would buy their own mini computers and PCs (that was called client-server and a whole lot of other names). Today, businesses can access computing resources when they need it and pay for what they use (the data centre is the reservoir and the pipes are the internet). That’s called cloud computing.
